A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

In the Athenian court, authority also rules over love – only three days left until the wedding of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, who he defeated and conquered in battle. And Hermia, who loves Lysander, is to marry Demetrius, as is her father’s wish. If she does not bend to his will, the law threatens her with death or life-long loneliness. At night the young lovers flee to the forest, followed by Demetrius and Helena, who loves him, but he doesn’t love her. They end up in the magical world of the royal fairy couple, Titania and Oberon, who are in the midst of their own marital dispute. Feeling hurt, Oberon seeks to get back at Titania with the help of a drug and Puck the sprite, while simultaneously remedying the young couple’s troubles. One hell of a grotesque trip through the wilderness ensues – with multiple partner swaps, and a laborer-cum-donkey features in one of them. Who loves who in the end? Who has the power over drives, love, and nature? And what is the role of the mythical forest?
