Annika Lu is a freelance costume and set designer – and a boundary-crosser between theatre and visual arts. She studied fashion design at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. She shares a special artistic alliance with director and set designer Ersan Mondtag. Together, they have developed visual worlds for productions such as Elfriede Jelinek’s “Wut” at Schauspiel Köln and “Antikrist” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. For the latter, Annika Lu received the Oper!-Award for Best Costume Design in 2023. In the 2024|25 season, she designed costumes for “Warten auf Godot” at Schauspielhaus Bochum as well as sets and costumes for „Orpheus in der Unterwelt“ at the Musikalische Komödie Leipzig. Annika Lu also regularly collaborates with Tobias Staab in the fields of dance, performance, and experimental music theatre. Another important artistic partner is Emre Akal, for whom she designed her first set in 2023 and has created costume designs multiple times.
