
Max Hammel has been Creative Director and Head of the Video Department at Schauspiel Köln since 2025, where he is responsible for the rebranding and the campaigns for the first season under Artistic Director Kay Voges. From 2020 to 2025, he led the video department at Volkstheater Wien. He has taught video art at institutions including Temple University Tokyo, the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, and the University of Art and Design Linz. Politically, he served as Creative Director of the Bierpartei and was a district councilor in Vienna from 2020 to 2024. Between 2010 and 2020, he worked as a director and cinematographer, realizing projects with agencies such as VICE, Jung von Matt, and DENTSU. His work has taken him to Japan, France, and Brazil, and has been presented at festivals including the Cannes Lions and the Biennale de Lyon. In 2024, he was named “Video Artist of the Year” by Theater Heute, and in 2025 he was nominated for the German Theatre Prize “Der Faust.”
