Julia Hansen, born in Hamburg, works internationally as a freelance set and costume designer for opera, dance, and theatre. She received the European Opera Directing Prize for her concept of “Fidelio” and the French Critics’ Award for Best Set and Costume Design for “Platée.” Her productions have earned multiple honors, including “Don Quichotte” (Austrian Music Theatre Prize) and “Barkouf” (Oper!Award 2019 for Best Rediscovery). From 2007 to 2011, she was head of design at Stadttheater Bern, where she worked on numerous opera and dance productions. She has collaborated with major houses such as the Opéra de Paris, Teatro Real Madrid, Semperoper Dresden, Royal Opera House London, Theater an der Wien, Cologne Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, and repeatedly with the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg. She also created stage designs for “Othello” (Dresden), “Mary Stuart” (Tokyo), and “Die Sache Makropoulos” (Malmö).
