Alexander Kerlin grew up in a village surrounded by sugar beet fields between Braunschweig and Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony and spent some time in Israel after leaving school before moving to Erlangen and Bochum to study Theatre Studies, Business and Psychology. He subsequently worked as a dramaturg in the independent sector in NRW, at Schauspiel Dortmund, at the Burgtheater and as Lead Dramaturg at the Volkstheater in Vienna, collaborating with Lucia Bihler, Itay Tiran, Adena Jacobs, Lily Sykes, Martin Kušej, Kay Voges, Anna-Sophie Mahler and Claudia Bauer, among others. In his roles as dramaturg and author, several of his productions have been invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. He sees his challenge as a writer to reconcile drama with the post-dramatic. His most recent play “Bullet time – Die Geburt des Kinos aus dem Geiste eines Mörders” received its world premiere at the Volkstheater in Vienna directed by Kay Voges. Alexander Kerlin is Lead Dramaturg at Schauspiel Köln from the 25|26 season.
