Stephan Kimmig (born 1959 in Stuttgart) studied acting at the Neue Münchner Schauspielschule. From 1988 to 1996, he lived in Amsterdam and worked as a freelance director in the Dutch and Belgian off-theater scenes. He served as resident director at Theater Heidelberg, Schauspiel Stuttgart, Thalia Theater Hamburg, and Deutsches Theater Berlin. Additionally, he directed productions at Schauspiel Frankfurt, Münchner Kammerspiele, Vienna’s Burgtheater, Schauspielhaus Zürich, and Volkstheater Wien. His opera debut was in 2009 with Mozart’s "Don Giovanni" at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Kimmig’s productions have been invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen four times. He won the Theaterpreis Der Faust for Best Director for “Maria Stuart” (2007, Thalia Theater Hamburg), along with the Rolf Mares Prize and 3sat Prize. In 2011, he received the Theaterpreis Der Faust again for Best Director for Gorky’s “Children of the Sun” at Deutsches Theater Berlin.
