With the Cologne City Library, we’re doing a deep dive into Heinrich Böll’s THE LOST HONOUR OF KATHARINA BLUM on January 31. All who are interested are invited. The interactive orientation at the Cologne City Library with drama educator David Vogel begins at 5:30 pm. Become better acquainted with the setup and structure while finding a way in to the plot, characters, and their relationships. Plus you’ll get an exclusive 30-minute tour of the Heinrich Böll Archive. A special highlight here is Heinrich Böll’s study, preserved in museum quality. Seeing the performance at Schauspiel Köln afterwards tops off the evening. The orientation, tour, and performance can only be reserved as a package for €21.00 or €10.50 (reduced) and are suitable for adults of all ages. Advance booking thru 27/01/2024.
Set in 1974, in THE LOST HONOUR OF KATHARINA BLUM a young woman leaves her apartment to go to a private dance event. Four days later she turns herself in to the police, confessing to having shot a journalist. She feels no remorse. What happened to Katharina Blum in the last four days? What led to this dramatic change? Using records, reports, and witness testimonies, Heinrich Böll reconstructs the paradigmatic tale of a violent escalation in his famous chronicle. The tabloids have their sights set on Katharina Blum because she spontaneously falls in love with a wanted terrorist suspect and aids his escape. She sees herself at the mercy of a campaign that stops at nothing and sells alternative information as generally accepted facts.
In THE LOST HONOUR OF KATHARINA BLUM, Heinrich Böll portrays a deeply patriarchal society in which populism and sexism mesh destructively. Fifty years after the story was published, director Bastian Kraft brings the story to the Depot 1 stage with an all-female cast.
