Michael Wilhelmi studied mathematics, logic, and philosophy in Leipzig, as well as piano, jazz, and composition at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, where he has been teaching improvisation for conducting students since 2004. Since 2001, he has been developing software for electronic music with the “Controller Band”; in 2009, this was followed by the ensemble concert series and online composition software “NewOpenForm.” He has been awarded the Berlin Senate’s Advancement Award, the Hanns Eisler Prize, and the Düsseldorf Young Culture Prize, and has worked as a composer, musical director, and pianist with Robert Wilson, Christoph Schlingensief, Herbert Fritsch, David Marton, Christoph Marthaler, and Volker Lösch. Orchestral adaptations include “Dunkel ist Nacht, Rigoletto” and “Doktor Bartholos Geheimnis” (Bielefeld, directed by Nadja Loschky) as well as “Orfeo” and “Kopf in den Wolken” (Cottbus, directed by Claudia Meyer). He is currently pursuing a PhD in mathematics and has given lectures in Vienna (EuroComb), Prague (EuroCG25), and Santander (EGC25).
