 Thematic Workshops

Thematic workshops focus on social issues: democracy, identity, gender roles, group dynamics. Using theater education methods, we offer new perspectives and options for empowerment and action. In this way, we introduce your group—almost effortlessly—to theater and the themes of the current season. Our workshops usually last two and a half hours and take place in our facilities. They are free of charge when combined with a performance visit. We are happy to advise you personally!

 Identitetris

Who are you—and what does our society have to do with you? What parts make up your identity? Which positions do you represent? Starting from our own biographies, we develop stories drawn from reality and assertion. What came first—yourself or your story? For groups that want to explore their place in society and anyone interested in autobiographical theater.

Dreamteam – A Group Course Full of Individuals

Theater is a team effort. On and behind the stage, people work together in different roles to ensure the smooth running of performances. This workshop uses theater education methods to focus on your group dynamics, strengthen team spirit, and challenge your solidarity. For groups just getting to know each other—and established groups looking for new impulses.

 True Peace

We explore what makes democratic and peaceful coexistence, collectively highlight the necessity of a diverse society, and discover practical ways to foster empathy. Using real examples from Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and other conflict regions, participants are encouraged to put themselves in others’ shoes and adopt different perspectives through role play, improvisation, and discussion.

 Critical Masculinity and Gender Lenses

For this workshop, we cooperate with the educational initiative Detox Identity, whose facilitators lead the sessions. Topics include toxic masculinity, impostor syndrome, gender stereotypes in public and on social media, as well as LGBTQIA+, intersectionality, and pop feminism. The starting point is the participants themselves: their experiences and questions, ideas, and stories.

After the performance, your group has the opportunity to discuss the experience directly with the ensemble and production team. How did you feel during the show? How was the production created? What questions do you have for the actors?

The post-show discussions are announced monthly in the Schauspiel Köln leporello.

Backstage at the theater: In a 60 to 90-minute tour, you’ll learn all about the creation of the theater on the Carlswerk site, a former factory for trolley wires and high-voltage cables. Additionally, we explain how a theater production comes to life and reveal secrets from the workshops—covering costumes, set design, and technical equipment. An inspiring behind-the-scenes tour, free of charge when combined with your performance visit!

ADDITIONAL OFFER FOR EDUCATORS AND TEACHERS

Every six months, we invite you to a collegial exchange: to introduce new impulses, present current projects, and discuss challenges in practical theater work. This includes a preview of the upcoming season’s premieres, a performance visit, and a behind-the-scenes look at the theater.

You’re the very first! At regular intervals, we offer interested teachers and multipliers the chance to attend rehearsal visits shortly before the premiere: take a look behind the scenes, gather impressions, share thoughts—and maybe even have a conversation with the production team.

In this open training session, we come together to experiment and discuss your questions: current productions, artistic forms, or theater education strategies serve as starting points for collaborative learning. The workshop lasts three hours and concludes with a collection of materials for direct use in the classroom.

Our annual training series for teachers, educators, and interested individuals seeking new inspiration for their theater work. We dissect classics from the current season in a fast-paced overview, highlight key text passages, analyze characters, and connect the themes to the present—tailored to your needs.
Dates: January 13 | January 20 | January 27 | February 3, 2026, plus a performance visit.

For groups (e.g., German department teams), we offer different formats—from first steps to scenic interpretation. The workshops are free of charge and can only be booked in connection with a performance visit. The materials used are provided to participants for use in their teaching.

 Scenic Interpretation of FAUST

Would you like to give your students— even without extensive prior experience—the opportunity to develop their own approach to dramatic texts? Through the use of still images, role immersion, and experimenting with attitudes and actions, the story and its characters come to life in a vivid way. Our basis is the well-known German tragedy FAUST, whose complexity and depth make it an ideal foundation for a creative and enjoyable exploration.

First Steps and Theater Games for Every Occasion

“Freeze” as an artistic technique is a little secret weapon with which we can create simple games and fantastic stories. This workshop offers exercises that can easily be integrated into the classroom. It provides an initial sense of how theater can be effectively used in school—and also strengthens group cohesion.

 Status Games

Just moments ago, the situation seemed under control—now it’s escalating. School is often a place of status struggles. But what determines whether a conversation turns into an argument or remains on equal footing? We examine the principles of status: What role do posture, voice, and inner attitude play? What effects arise? In this way, we become status players with the promising prospect of successful communication.
