In 1932 and ‘33, one of the greatest humanitarian catastrophes of the 20th century occurred: the Holodomor (murder by starvation) – a little known crime of the Soviet Union in Ukraine in which several million people starved. The famine resulted from the destruction of agriculture via forced collectivization. The government under Stalin stood back and used the starvation to break the Ukrainian farmers’ resistance and establish Bolshevik power in the villages. It hid the events from the world – an early production of fake news. Only in the 1990s did historical research become possible. Today the government advocates for the international recognition of the Holodomor as genocide.
