DANCE GUEST PERFORMANCE
Dada Masilo

Dada Masilo's The Sacrifice

Depot 1
17th & 18th February 2022
For the first time, the South African dancer and choreographer Dada Masilo will be our guest in Cologne, with her dancers and musicians. She is known for her bold and radical re-interpretations of classical ballets from Swan Lake to Romeo and Juliet. For her new work The Sacrifice (The Victims), inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, she connects the European heritage of this classic with the traditional dance of the Tswana people of Botswana, characterised by its unique rhythm and expression, and traditionally used both for storytelling and as a healing ritual.

Born in Johannesburg, Dada Masilo begins dance training at The Dance Factory aged 11 and completes her training at the National School of Arts in South Africa at the age of 17. After two further years of study at P.A.R.T.S in Brussels, she begins to choreograph. In 2008, she is already awarded the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance. Since 2012, Masilo has a presence in Europe with her choreographies. She also tours worldwide withWilliam Kentridge’s Refuse the Hour. In 2016, her piece Swan Lake is nominated for the Bessie Award and in 2017 she receives the Danza&Danza Award – Best Performance 2017 for Giselle. In 2018, she receives the Prince Claus “Next Generation” Award.
