EDWARD II

Online series
WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES
Based on Christopher Marlowe's play EDWARD II, the Austrian dramatist Ewald Palmetshofer rewrites the story of the renegade ruler King Edward II. He shifts the conflicts of the acting political personalities exclusively into the private sphere, where a new battlefield emerges: Desire and passion are facing reasons of state and control, longing and personal happiness are fighting against responsibility andaspirations to power. Is love, too, just a commodity to be traded to get what one wants?

Director Pınar Karabulut is now transforming Palmetshofer's text into an exclusive online series of six episodes. Starting on 12 February, a new episode will be released every Friday!

Endless Summer

by Madame Nielsen
The Danish author and performer Madame Nielsen is a star in Scandinavia. With ENDLESS SUMMER she has written a melancholy, longing book of memories, the story of a summer in which suddenly everything is possible. They meet in a white mansion in Denmark. The mother. The jealous stepfather. The girl. The shy boy. The Portuguese. The beautiful Lars. A love story begins that changes everything. For a while the laws of everyday life are suspended, the white courtyard becomes a utopian place, time loses its shape - until the dissolution begins. A shimmering tale of love and death, the requiem for a summer and the people who were cared for in it.

Hurricane Season

by Fernanda Melchor
For years it has been the number one topic of conversation for residents of La Matosa, a small village in the Mexican province. Revered, despised, feared and only called »the witch« by everyone, they are told the most gruesome stories about her: she does it with the devil, speaks with the dead, brews all kinds of remedies. Until one day she is found dead in a sugar cane field under the shimmering heat between the reeds and the noise of the engines of the country road. Who did this to her, what is the motive behind it? Bit by bit, the prehistory of the murder is revealed through the multi-perspective plot of six orphaned souls: Yesenia, who learned at an early age to take responsibility for her family, Luismi, Munra and Brando, who can only escape the hopelessness and poverty through intoxication, Chabela who has been prostituting herself for as long as she can remember, and 13 year old Norma, who is fleeing the consequences of her unwanted pregnancy.

BLACKWATER

ONLINE STREAM
A Spanish island, an Austrian politician, the niece of a Russian oligarch: it’s a toxic combination. In front of a running, secretly installed camera, the man promises the woman control over the national media landscape to strengthen his own power. At the same time, in his Dionysian intoxication, he also proffers her the local nature: Rivers and lakes could be profitability privatised, and mountains and valleys used for lucrative road constructions. When the plan becomes public knowledge, the politician and his government are torn apart.
Actor Stefko Hanushevsky and director Rafael Sanchez did not rest after their premiere in October. Instead, the two of them started with a lot of energy and humour to conceive the performance for the camera! You now have again the opportunity to experience theatre on the big stage - or rather in a coach - from the comfort of your own home!

The Grapes of Wrath

Cinematic adaptation
The deconstruction of the American Dream is at the centre of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel THE GRAPES OF WRATH. John Steinbeck tells the story of the Joad farming family from Oklahoma who, after years of drought, gives up their old life and sets out on a journey along Route 66. Their destination: California. But the Californian Dream recedes continuously further into the distance as the migrants only encounter swindlers, exploitation, and exclusion in the West. A story of the hour, revealing the connections between the economic crisis, the migration movement and climate change.

BIRDS OF A KIND

Split Screen Stream
A modern version of ROMEO AND JULIET, told in Hebrew, Arabic, English and German. After his award-winning work VERBRENNUNGEN (BURNS, original title INCENDIES), Stefan Bachmann is now staging a play by Wajdi Mouawad for the second time, transforming it into a cinematic form.
BY RICHARD SIEGAL / BALLET OF DIFFERENCE

New Ocean Sea Cycle
Pinakothek Ed.
1/14 – Baffin

PART OF THE 17TH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE
OF THE STATE CAPITAL MUNICH »DANCE 2021«
IN NEW OCEAN SEA CYCLE - PINAKOTHEK ED. 1/14 - BAFFIN, Richard Siegal designs, together with the light artist Matthias Singer, a mathematical system that translates climate change data into choreographic actions using a specially developed algorithm. The choreography is based on a graphic representation of the extent to which the polar ice covers the seas in the polar region. As technical as this method sounds, it nevertheless enables the special uniqueness of each individual performance.

The renowned choreographer Richard Siegal presents his new creation in the rotunda of the Pinakothek der Moderne. The performance in the Pinakothek der Moderne is based on the development of the Baffin Sea. Under the huge sphere of the sculpture HOWL by the Indian-British artist Anish Kapoor, Richard Siegal puts his choreography in direct relation to the space and makes climate change tangible for everyone.

ENCOUNTERS1

LITERARY ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN DANCE,
THE FINE ARTS AND PHILOSOPHY
A cooperation between Kolumba, Tanz.Köln and the German Archive for Dance in Cologne
Dance, the fine arts, philosophy, literature and film meet in the context of an exhibition about art and choreography hosted by the Kolumba museum. The dance legend Isadora Duncan, the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and the writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal come together in a performative installation of text and film. They represent the aesthetic awakening in dance, literature and philosophy at the beginning of the 20th century.

ENCOUNTERS2

LITERARY ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN DANCE,
THE FINE ARTS AND PHILOSOPHY
A cooperation between Kolumba, Tanz.Köln and the German Archive for Dance in Cologne
As part of the exhibition on art and choreography, there will be unusual literary encounters between dance, visual arts, philosophy, literature and film. In the form of a performative text and film montage, the dancer Waslaw Nijinksy, the composer Igor Stravinsky and the art critic and impresario Sergej Diaghilew meet in the second episode.

Diaghilev's vision of integrating all the arts in a dance-like total work of art had found congenial comrades in Waslaw Nijinsky and Igor Stravinsky who brought the Russian ballet to new world fame in the metropolises of Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. But the performances of the »Ballets Russes« not only earned applause. Again and again there were angry protests at premieres and performances. In the case of the three protagonists, the text montage gives an insight into the night side of artistic creation, which repeatedly caught up with the dancer as well as the impresario and encouraged both to idiosyncratic reflections on their artistic creation and the lack of understanding of the audience and critics.

ENCOUNTERS3

LITERARY ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN DANCE,
THE FINE ARTS AND PHILOSOPHY
A cooperation between Kolumba, Tanz.Köln and the German Archive for Dance in Cologne
As part of the exhibition on art and choreography, there will be unusual literary encounters between dance, visual arts, philosophy, literature and film. In the third and last episode, the dancers Mary Wigman and Gret Palucca and the painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner meet in the form of a performative text and film montage.

In 1926, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner met Mary Wigman und Gret Palucca in Dresden. While Mary Wigman is practising her group dance work „Totentanz“ (Dance of the dead) in the Kleine Foyer at the royal residence, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner is always present as a „silent partner“: He reflects on and draws what he sees and realizes the deep connection between dance and painting, which are the modern arts of those years. Kirchner sees Mary Wigman and himself als soulmates when it comes to their art: „Her aspirations in dance are the same ones as mine are in painting.“ Mary Wigman and Gret Palucca are also searching for new forms of reflections about the art of dance…and find them in language.

Encounters #3 closes a series of reflections on dance and linguistics: Starting with the lecture „Dance of the future“ by Isadora Duncan (Encounters #1), continuing with the diary of Waslaw Nijinsky (Encounters #2) and ending with the prosaic sketches of Mary Wigman – each text is an image of the times which has meaning and impact beyond its years of origin.
