Radical artist and theater avant-gardist Antonin Artaud called for a “body without organs.” He described the body without organs as a force capable of exploding all reason. Some years later, postmodern thinkers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari took up his concept, expanding it to include a socio-political dimension – an ecstatic intensity contraposes capitalism’s cold rationality. But is the one force even thinkable without the other? And from today’s view, hasn’t capitalism already absorbed the principle of intensity, appropriated it as its essential core? Choreographer Richard Siegal addresses these questions when reflecting on what ballet can be in the 21st century. On the one hand there’s the foundational principle of a centuries-old European tradition, with all its historical baggage. On the other hand is the boundary-breaking force which promises freedom and ultimately results in a destructive anarchy. Must that which is right for society also hold true for art? And how much difference can the discipline of ballet even stomach?
